Cosmetic surgery: Beauty or beast?
Cosmetic surgery is booming, but what's the
mental cost of changing your appearance?
Abstract
Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the "correction" or restoration of form and function. Though cosmetic or aesthetic surgery is the best-known kind of plastic surgery, most plastic surgery is not cosmetic; plastic surgery includes many types of reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns. The top five cosmetic surgeries include breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck.
Cosmetic plastic surgery is performed in order to change one's appearance. For some, it may mean redesigning the body's contour and shape, the elimination of wrinkles, or eliminating balding areas. Others may choose varicose vein treatment or breast augmentation. There are a number of cosmetic surgery procedures that men and women can choose from in order to create an image that makes them feel more confident and comfortable with their appearance.
Although health insurance rarely covers the cost of cosmetic procedures, the number of individuals deciding to undergo cosmetic plastic surgery continues to grow. The top five cosmetic surgeries include breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck.
Further, it is not just women who are opting to enhance their appearance through surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of men seeking these procedures is on the rise.
How people can be influenced with plastic surgery?
Television programs that promote plastic surgery.
One of the most popular reality show, The Swan is a 2004 American reality television program broadcast on Fox in which women who were judged to be ugly were given "extreme makeovers" that included several forms of plastic surgery.
K-pop culture explosion that hit the world of Korean celebrities currently implicated as a cause of some but really it depends on the level of an individual's self-confidence.
Most common plastic
surgery.
Breast Surgery
Breast augmentation is a surgery in which the doctor opens the breast tissue and places a gel-like capsule, that increases the cup size of the breasts. This is popular for those who feel their breasts are too small, mismatched or saggy. According to the University of Michigan Department of Surgery website, those who undergo a breast augmentation have more than a 25 percent chance of incurring complications that require a second operation. This normally is a result of the capsule breaking or shrinking.
Chin, cheek, or
jaw reshaping
Cosmetic plastic surgery to change the shape of the chin, cheek, or jaw may be performed. This procedure is typically done to enhance certain facial features, or to bring a certain aspect of the face into proportion with the rest of the face. For the reshaping of the chin, cheek, or jaw, the surgeon may insert an implant into the area to redefine its appearance.
The medical term for an eyelid lift is blepharoplasty. This procedure can remove puffiness or bags under the eyes. It can also correct droopy eyelids.
In this procedure, the physician surgically removes excess fat, muscle, and skin from both the upper and lower eyelids to redefine the shape of the eye.
Lip
Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can give you fuller, plumper lips. These days, an injectable dermal filler is the most commonly used method of lip augmentation. There are many types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and around your mouth. But the most common fillers today are products that contain substances similar to hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. It helps increase volume in your lips.
Nose reshaping
Cosmetic nose reshaping is also known as rhinoplasty. The procedure can reduce or increase the size of the nose, narrow the span of the nostrils, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, and/or change the tip or bridge of the nose. It can also correct some breathing problems.
Plastic Surgery Risks.
- Temporary numbness or loss of feeling at the site of the incision is fairly common in face-lifts and tummy tucks, though it’s rarely permanent.
- Some tissue death from surgical manipulation, called necrosis, is inevitable after any procedure, though your risks increase dramatically if you’re a smoker. That’s because smoking affects blood supply to the tissues.
- Infections are rare in plastic surgery patients, since most are healthy to begin with. When they happen, however, they can spread quickly and must be stopped immediately.
- The rarest and most feared of side effects is, of course, death. Toxic levels of anesthetics have been known to cause respiratory failure in some patients.
